Co-curricular skills are also given consideration, particularly those which will contribute to the atmosphere for the vitality and creativity which is one of the hallmarks of the school.

" I have been following the development of The Learning School (TLS) since its inception. The way it has developed in such a short period is amazing. The commitment of the Kot Radha Kishan residents is unconventional. This wouldn't have been possible without the unconditional support and commitment of TLS Trustees especially Dr. Noor and Anwarji.

The level The Learning School has reached one can undoubtedly say that students of TLS will be the successful members of the national and international community.

TLS is a inspiration for me to take forward my personal initiative 'Adharshila' (www.adharshila.net). Adharshila wouldn't have been possible without the inspiration and support of TLS and Anwar ji.

I feel proud to be part of TLS.

I wish all the success to TLS Trustees and its Teachers. "

Staff Developments

The Learning School arranged a Training Workshop for sixteen of its staff members on ‘Working together to Build a Community of Responsive Educators', at Dev Samaj College of Education, Chandigarh (India). This workshop was from 5th May to 14th May 2006.

The training was very successful and the delegates were able to meet many important personalities including Shri I. K. Gujral (former Indian Prime Minister), Ms Suman Krishan Kant (wife of former Vice President of India, Shri Krishan Kant), Mrs Kant's Mother who is 102 year old (as both of the ladies are working on social sector), and Prof. K.N. Pathak, Vice Chancellor of Punjab University, Chandigarh.

During the visit to India, the delegates also got an opportunity to visit several good schools in Delhi and Chandigarh and to get new ideas, which were later implemented at The Learning School.

The team visited class rooms and met children, who were happy to have Pakistani teachers amongst them. The team invited these schools for the promotion of peace between both of the countries with the slogan "Aao Dosti Karain" (let's make friendship) and requested for a teacher exchange program. The schools accepted their offer immediately and the administration of TLS now plans to invite them to their campus in the near future.

The comprehensive training workshop at Dev Samaj College of Education, Chandigarh, allowed the guests to give their input about:-
  • Improving the quality of teaching and learning through Enquiry;
  • Building learning relationships in classroom using alternative/theater techniques;
  • Developing the Role of Special Education Needs
  • Focusing on appraisals and school development plans
  • Working with puppets in a classroom
  • The Teaching Learning Matrix: the need to plan the lessons, micro skills and planning
  • Getting started with tools of teaching: Teaching Methodologies for teaching Social Studies, Science, English, and Mathematics
  • Understanding the Magical mystery of accepting

The Delegate visited following schools during their stay in India:-
  • Balvantray Mehta Vidya Bhawan Anguridevi Shersingh Memorial Academy, New Delhi established by Servants of the People Society that has 2500 students where special children are integrated in the class rooms with normal children.
  • Vivik High School, Chandigarh - (about 2,000 students) - Teaching through Critical thinking.
  • St. John High School, Chandigarh - (Boys Best School in Chandigarh, about 2,000 students) with a new concept of "Learning Centre" where mentally disturbed children were taking care and then put into regular classes.
  • Small Wonder School, Chandigarh- It was established in 2003 for primary grade children with a lot of wonderful ideas and it was really a wonderful experience for the teachers because The Learning School also wanted to start a school for the younger children in the following year.
  • KB DAV Senior Secondary Public School (Sector-7), Chandigarh - About 2,500 students - A really nice school with latest laboratories. The teachers came one step ahead towards designing and using better laboratories for students.

The staff of The Learning School is grateful to the administration, faculty and staff of all of the above schools for providing them a very warm welcome during their visit.

More than ten newspapers and two news channels covered this visit. Thus, the event turned out to be a successful one. It not only helped to promote peace in the subcontinent, but also helped TLS improve the high quality education being provided here.

Democratic norms at TLS

TLSC is an institute which believes in teamwork and self responsibility by creating an environment of competition and appreciation rather then threats and punishments from principal to guards & teachers to students.

All the students of TLSC are divided into four houses namely Iqbal House, Jinnah House, Fatima House and Ayesha House for all their activities and evaluation linearly and horizontally divided in to three sections for administrative purposes namely Junior Section, Middle Section and High Section in this way each class belongs to a particular section and house.

Each house competes with other through out the whole year from the morning assembly, discipline, class cleanliness, sports to academics. And mistake of one or group of students can deduce the marks and achievement of one student or a group at student can increase and add up marks. And the house scoring maximum marks is declared house of the year at the end of session. Thus implying the self responsibility on each student. And students themselves are check on each other.

To inculcate leadership & democracy among the students following student's administration is working. Any student scoring 70% marks can apply for class posts, while for higher post most senior concerned classes of same eligibility can apply.

All the Teachers, Administrative staff, Ayas, Guards, Drivers are evaluated through separate proforma which contain measurable points thus five being max and zero m in points which is ultimately associated with additional pay rise apart from the regular increments.

Section heads are supposed to fill the proforma and teachers sign their respective proforma if they agree or they can appeal to the principal for non-satisfaction hence the matter is brought to solution with logical reasoning and documentary proves, if yet not satisfied can apply to the Trust (KDT) for the final appeal through a written application forwarded by the Principal.

At the end of year the Best Teacher of each section Best Administrative Staff, Best Ayas, Best Driver & Best Guard are declared with award of an honorary Shield.
